Hasselback Sweet Potatoes Ingredients

To make this recipe, you will need sweet potatoes, butter, olive oil, salt, black pepper and whatever toppings you’d like to add to your potatoes to make them sweet or savory.

How Do You Make Hasselback Sweet Potatoes?

The first step is to thinly slice the sweet potatoes. Start by putting a potato on a cutting board with a chopstick on either side. Cut 1/4 inch slices across the potato. The chopsticks will keep your knife from cutting all the way through. Repeat the process with all of the sweet potatoes, then put them on a prepared baking sheet. Mix together the olive oil, butter, salt and pepper, and rub the mixture all over the potatoes and in between the slices. Bake the sweet potatoes until they are tender inside, then add toppings of your choice and serve.

Tips For The Perfect Dish

  • Choose potatoes that are similar in size and shape so that they cook at the same rate.
  • Be sure to use a very sharp knife to make even slices in your potatoes. I typically use a smaller paring knife. I find that it’s more precise than a larger chef’s knife for this task.
  • Leftover Hasselback sweet potatoes will stay fresh in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days .
  • These potatoes go well with a variety of main course options including chicken madeira , air fryer chicken breast , Instant Pot pulled pork , grilled lamb chops and smoked tri tip .
  • If it seems like your potatoes are not fanning out as they cook, you can use a fork to separate the layers halfway through the cooking process.
  • You can prepare your potatoes up to 8 hours before you plan to put them in the oven.

Quick Tip

If you choose toppings that need to be cooked, such as fresh garlic, marshmallows or cheese, add them during the last 5-7 minutes of the cooking time .

Hasselback potatoes get their name from a Swedish restaurant. The restaurant was called Hasselbacken and the these potatoes were first served there in 1953. The potatoes quickly gained popularity in Sweden. As this dish gained popularity, this dish became known as Hasselback potatoes around the world.

Use a sharp knife like a paring knife or chef’s knife. Medium sized sweet potatoes work best as they will be easier to cut than large or small potatoes. Place chopsticks or wooden spoons on either side of the potatoes to keep the knife from accidentally cutting through. Cut your potato slices to about 1/4 inch in thickness. Try to cut most of the way through the potatoes. Take care not to cut too far on the ends of the potatoes where there is less room. Leave the skin on the sweet potatoes, as it will help the potato slices hold together and improve the flavor.

Hasselback Sweet Potatoes Flavor Variations

While this recipe is great as-is, it is so easy to customize the flavors to suit your tastes.

  • Flavorings: You can flavor your oil and butter mixture with dried herbs such as Italian seasoning, garlic powder, maple syrup, cinnamon or honey.
  • Toppings: Get creative with your toppings! For savory potatoes, save a tablespoon of the olive and butter mixture, and add minced garlic and fresh herbs such as thyme, rosemary and parsley. Drizzle the garlic and herb butter over the potatoes during the last 7-10 minutes of the cooking time. You can also insert thin slices of cheese in between the potato slices towards the end of the cooking time. Try a sweet option with a sprinkle of brown sugar, dried cranberries, pecans and even mini marshmallows.
  • Potatoes: This technique also works with other types of potatoes such as Yukon Gold potatoes, Russet potatoes and red potatoes.

Whether you’re serving a holiday meal or looking for an easy weeknight side, these Hasselback sweet potatoes will be a hit!
