How Do You Make Garlic Knots?

The first step to making garlic knots is to grab a can of pizza dough. Remove the dough from the can and slice the it into strips. Place the strips flat on a sheet pan and then tie each strip into a knot, tucking the ends of the knot underneath as you go. Brush each knot with a mixture of melted butter, garlic, herbs and parmesan cheese. Reserve half of your butter mixture. After a quick trip through the oven, you’ve got golden brown perfection. Add the reserved butter mixture, then serve the rolls up hot with a side of warm marinara for dipping.

Tips For The Perfect Garlic Knots

  • Use a can of pizza dough rather than making your own. Canned pizza dough is easy to use and comes out of the can with the perfect thickness. No rolling pins are required!
  • Have a bowl of warm marinara sauce for dipping. Choose your favorite brand of sauce. I like Newman’s Own and Rao’s marinara sauce. You can warm the sauce with a few seconds in the microwave.
  • You can place a piece of parchment paper on your sheet pan to make clean up easier.
  • You can freeze these knots and serve them up to three months later. To reheat them place them frozen on a sheet pan and warm them in an oven at 350 degrees F for 12 to 15 minutes.

Quick Tip

Use a pizza cutter to slice evenly through the dough. You can also use kitchen shears if you don’t have a pizza cutter.

While garlic knots may have been first created in New York, now you can find them on menus and kitchen tables across the United States and beyond.

Garlic Knot Variations

While these knots are delicious, you can change up the flavor to suit your taste.

  • Garlic Lover: If you’re a big garlic fan, you can increase the amount of garlic powder to 3/4 teaspoon or substitute 1 teaspoon of fresh minced garlic.
  • Flaky Knots: You can use biscuit dough instead of pizza dough if you prefer. Simply stretch out the dough into strips and make the knots.
  • Cinnamon: For a cinnamon sugar version, simply mix together 1/3 cup butter, 1/3 cup granulated sugar and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon. Spread the mixture on the dough strips and then tie the knots together and bake them.

I always keep a can of pizza dough in the fridge for when a garlic knot craving strikes. These little guys even make a great party appetizer!
